This event consisited of a Sound/Video Installation by Alphabyte, Hillary Mullaney and Kate Delaney, followed by a musical performance by American musicians, Brian Day and Jay Kreimer of Seeded Plain.
Alphabyte: Beyond Borders
Beyond Borders, created collectively by Kate Delaney and Hilary Mullaney, involves both composers using shared synthesized and recorded source materials. The process consists of both artists swapping previously recorded and developed samples. This interaction results in a continuous exchange of the work, which in turn develops the overall structure of the piece.
Though we are using a common catalogue of sounds, as composers we both approach the composition process very differently. In this project we have endeavored to explore this dynamic in new and meaningful way. The main goal of this piece is to show the audience that from the same foundation or center an individuals' self expression can emerge. This piece was recently selected by SoundNetwork for the Comfort Of Strangers exhibition at Futuresonic 2008 in Manchester, UK and also released on Sound Report: Comfort of Strangers a Sound Network a release of collaborative work.
Brian Day: Seeded Plain
I'm Bryan Day, an improviser and instrument builder from Nebraska in the US. My own instrument building workshop is in Ireland (some of my instrument designs are online, I also have photos). In addition to being a sound artist, I run Public Eyesore records, www.publiceyesore.com. For the performance, I'll be bringing acoustic and electronic instruments of my own design made from oak/rosewood/bronze/steel etc. I'll be bringing two or three of my newer designs plus some electronics on this trip. I'll be bringing the Tapewarp, Rotochand, and bubblephone, plus some homemade electronics (I have diagrams on my myspace page, soon photos). I will be with Jay Kreimer, another instrument designer from the US, performing a few shows as 'Seeded Plain'. Jay's setup is a very free sound sculpture made from all sorts of material, looks almost like a large bush of wires and fishing line, rubber pieces parts of toys - amazing. Also amazing is that it fits it into our suitcases.
Jay Kreimer: Seeded Plain
Jay Kreimer is a musician, instrument builder, sculptor, composer and educator. He has a BA from the University of Nebraska and an MA from San Francisco State University. Kreimer is an adjunct professor of writing, creative problem solving, art and leadership at Doane College-Lincoln. He has performed music, and in collaboration with Wendy Weiss, shown artwork through the U.S. and Canada. He is an alchemist of hardware stores, surplus catalogs, and discarded objects, who seems to be in a constant creative flow with words, music, pictures and any kind of found or invented object. He takes these in and rearranges them to present as new sounds, new writings, and new devices. Kreimer has spent a lifetime assembling new things out of little scraps of possibility. Whether as artist, teacher, musician, or in conversation, Kreimer finds what is worthwhile, and works it into a larger context.
